Adults need a variety of tools to learn, so we use a variety of methods to teach. People who start the program will be given to tools that are right for them.  It’s about babysteps and moving consistently in the right direction to help you reach your goal.

Our mission is to make high quality diabetes learning available regardless of where people live, while respecting culture and geography.

The goal is to positively impact the health needs of people living with  diabetes in Manitoba.

Diabetes Education Program Elements

What You Will Learn

Learning is a lifelong process.  You can always learn something new! Although diabetes can be complex, managing it doesn’t have to be. GMDEC believes in delivering a program that matches the learner, so each session is tailored to meet your needs.

Accessing GMDEC

Patients at any stage of diabetes can be referred by:

  • Physician
  • Homecare
  • Nurse
  • Family / Caregiver
  • CHR
  • Self Referral
  • ADI worker

Elements

  • Private sessions 1-on-1 or small group sessions (2-8 people)
  • Live group classes:  Weekly group classes (Thursdays 1:30-2:30 broadcast over Manitoba Telehealth )
  • Telephone follow-up calls
  • Printed support material
  • Insulin starts

Targets

People who complete the course will have diabetes knowledge base for:

  • Blood Sugar Testing
  • Insulin and Medicine
  • Food
  • Healthy Living

Know what to expect:

Meetings over Telehealth at the nursing station or health centre are as close as in-person. Bring your questions and let’s talk!

Get to know your numbers…if you have a blood sugar monitor, bring it along with your logbook.

Leaning is best when it is hands on!  Bring all your medicines and   supplies so that you can learn the best way to use them!
